Memorial Day

Memorial Day marks the weekend that the cottage opens up. Melissa had to work Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, so I went up to the cottage alone Friday night. After a few sunny days with temperatures in the upper 80s earlier in the week, I was hoping for the best. But our tradition of foul weather was not violated as a cold-front came through bringing low temperatures and rain. Despite the weather we put the docks in and opened things up – and all contracted a bad case of swimmer’s itch (a parasite that gets under the skin and makes red welts that look and feel like mosquito bites). The story of this year will be the swan that built a nest on our lake-front. On Sunday Jason did a 9.5 mile run around 3 of the 4 lakes. Darren and Cheri came up, and took advantage of the breeze.Since I don’t plan to do anything special on my actual birthday (May 31) we enjoyed cake with Sarah and Dan’s family.Grandpa was up to his usual mischief.
Melissa got out of work early on Sunday and also got Monday off. This worked out well, because I don’t think I could have pedaled the tandem bicycle by myself. On Monday Jason and Melissa did a 5.2 mile run around the lake.

Dave and Sue came up with their kids, and we had the traditional weenie roast. Before our food could settle the guys played an intense game of volleyball while the girls laid on their towels and talked about girl-stuff.The weekend was concluded with less than super tubing. Our boat isn’t starting, so we had to use Randy’s. His boat is the better skiing boat, but it is far inferior for pulling tubers. Afterward Darren and Randy complained of muscle fatigue, but my daily routine of chin-ups prepared me very well for the rigors of tubing. It was great to get back out on the water.
