We got a dog. Melissa's friend Todd from work had two German Shepherd sisters, Kafka and Malachi. The problem was Kafka became dominant over Malachi and made life rough for her. Not only did Malachi suffer some nasty battle scars where she was bit by Kafka, but she was having behavioral problems related to being submissive. So they gave her to us hoping that separating the two would make things better. After a couple difficult days getting used to us, she has become a real sweetheart.

Most people don't think she is a German Shepherd when the see her. She comes from a German working line. She's only a second generation American, so most of her pedigree is written in German. The German working lines are darker, more rugged and energetic than the American show lines. The American show lines are bred for aesthic and body coutour. She's all black, which among German Shepherds is not common, but not rare either. She's a little big, and her ears are a little floppy. Although it's desirable for GSD's to have perky ears it's not common for their ears to droop. And since she's such a large dog they suspect that most of the calcium went to her bones when she was a puppy rather than her ear cartilige.

She's really gotten used to us, she's become a part of our family, and we love her.
